E·mo·tion – əˈmōSH(ə)n/ – noun : a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one’s circumstances, mood, or relationships with others.
Or, I like to think of them as little bubbles of energy that sometimes get mixed up with our thoughts. As humans, this is more common than not, especially when our little friend of an ego gets involved. You see, our ego likes to infuse our emotions by allowing them to get stuck and wrapped up in the ideas around the emotion instead of just letting the emotion flow on through our body.
Here’s a great example of when our ego tries to take to take control: let’s say your friend hurts your feelings by calling you a name or saying something that catches you off guard. How do you react? Or should I say how does your ego react? It tries to persuade you to get angry at your friend and criticize her. It tries to dwell in the story.
The ego loves to take us by the hand and twirl us around like a little ballerina! We take comfort in this by creating an ego-run strategy of revenge because it comes more natural to us or seems like the easier way out. When in reality, we should recognize that this comment that was made by our friend is a trigger to some sort of energy blockage within our soul that caused this reaction.
Pinpoint the ego.
Feel the emotion.
Don’t try and move away from it.
Let the other thoughts associated with the emotion go.
If you can do this, if you can allow yourself to be one with your emotions, you will have a new outlook on life. You will inherit more compassion and have a better understanding of why our friends, family, co-workers and even strangers act a certain way and say things that they do.
Our egoistic mind and thoughts can really stir our life pot and cause our emotions to explode! Whereas, if we experience the rawness of an emotion, it will be pure, clear and sharp. It will rush right through us.
Even difficult emotions we need to endure because these are the very ones that tend to teach us the most and allow us to connect with others. And on that note, I’d like to point out that emotions are a universal experience and shouldn’t be defined as being either good or bad. Uncomfortable? Yes, but bad? No. They just are. Sadness and madness don’t have to associate with negative emotions and enthusiasm and happiness doesn’t have to associate with positive emotions. They can just be!
Now let’s rewind back to your friend’s unfriendly comment. If you chose the alternate, raw emotional route, you would have responded in a light and loving way. You may have responded to your friend with something along the lines of, “I apologize if I’m rubbing off on you the wrong way tonight. Thank you for letting me know!” OR you could recognize that your friend might be having an off day. Forgive her and send her some loving energy.
Our inner energy flow starts the moment we begin to FEEL our emotions and experience our inner disturbances, without falling into the hands of our ego. We then feel peace and ease.
Again... Feel the emotion. Experience the emotion. LET GO of the emotion.
Nothing in life is solid: not moments, not experiences, not thoughts and not emotions. Everything is in a constant state of flow, yet our minds like to stay fixed on perceptions. It’s easy to hoard everything in life, but we must pinch ourselves and remind ourselves that nothing can stand still. Not me, not you. Not today, not tomorrow. Everything is in a state of motion so we must accept this and let it go in order to see the true essence of the present.
What a beautiful thing it is as humans that we are able to experience all measures of emotions—from joy to jealousy to sadness to complete excitement—at all times throughout our life. We can witness them all, embrace them all and watch them go on through our body like a wave in the ocean.
