So without further adieu, please enjoy the following interview straight from this gorgeous mama (of 2!), entrepreneur, nutritionist, chef, yoga instructor AND health advocate! (She's a busy one!).
1. What sparked the idea for Philosophie?
Philosophie began with me simply wishing that I could have an amazing blend of superfoods and proteins together in one, convenient jar. I didn’t want to run out of maca or another individual ingredient and then feel like my smoothie wasn’t complete, so I went all over LA searching for high quality, fair-trade, organic superfoods and then began packing them into mason jars and little bags. I started giving the blends to friends and family and making everyone workout and nutrition guides. One day, I was in the sea in Israel with my husband, Adi, and he turned to me and said, “You should really grow what you’re doing and share it with more people, make it a company.” And that’s when it really took off.
2. What makes you & your company one-of-a kind?
When I started creating the superfood + protein blends, I noticed that all of the vegan protein powders on the market were loaded with sugar or soy. I wanted to make a blend without any added sugar and soy while also ensuring that I could eat it raw and love it. The Philosophie superfood + protein blends (Green Dream, Berry Bliss, and Cacao Magic) are all vegan, raw, gluten-free, and have absolutely no filler ingredients. They contain nothing but the purest, most healing ingredients that have been deemed “superfoods” due to their exceptional nutrient density.
3. What drives you to get out of bed every day and continue what you’re doing?
My kids, Kai and Leo, and my husband, Adi. They are my rock, and all I want to really do is create a happy, healthy home and life with them.
4. What inspires-or-drives your creative ideas?
I receive inspiration from my environment, which I view as being the people in my life and the moments and experiences I encounter, from the positive to the negative. The Berry Bliss blend, for example, was inspired by my trip to Thailand and falling in love with its exotic fruits, like mangosteen, whereas Cacao Magic was influenced by my mother’s battle with cancer.
5. What have been some of the highlights of your success?
The Philosophie products have helped everyone from George Clooney to my own dad and are continuing to help so many more people discover wellness and feel as vibrant + ALIVE as they can.
6. What is the best part about owning your own business?
The freedom to push forward, to be able to make a change in your business if you see something not working or harming the company rather than strengthening it.
7. What are some of the challenges?
Time—there’s so much, too much to be done. And I really want to do EVERYTHING that I can; I want to share wellness with as many people as I can around the world, but I also want to feel free, like I can hike, dance, and play with my kids without being chained to my laptop all the time. I want to stop and smell the roses, and as a huge believer in the power of balance, I think everyone should be able to.
8. How did you break into health and wellness? (would love to know about relevant jobs, classes or schooling that helped build your experience)
I gravitated towards psychology and received my B.A. in the field—I really see it as something that helped me forge a path to mental wellness and inner strength. I also found a home within yoga and began to passionately study it, which lead to me becoming a member of the Yoga Alliance as an advanced teacher and getting certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a personal trainer.
After college, I began working at an organic raw juice bar down the block from my house and eventually became the manager of the store. I was so excited to help change the eating habits of others and was also able to change my own habits and find a path to curing some of my own discomfort that I faced with dairy, meat, and other foods that weren’t working for me at the time. I became a certified raw vegan chef and my passion for healthy eating lead me to create Philosophie.
9. How did you learn how to start your own business? Were there any mentors or teachers who provided guidance and support throughout this process?
Sadly, no. I made a lot of mistakes and still do. I have no business background.
My husband helped me in the beginning and it was just the two of us. I continue to throw ideas against the wall and hope that they stick. I follow my intuition which keeps getting better and by just existing in this world of business I'm learning so much. I enjoy it but it's definitely challenging without any mentors or helpers!
I couldn't do any of what I do today without my amazing team. They are my support system!
10. What would you have told an earlier YOU, when you were first starting out?
Not to take on a partner. I took on a business partner out of fear of doing it alone and gave her 50% of my company. Huge mistake. It ended badly. I would tell myself to just hang tight, not be afraid and just believe in myself and my abilities.
11. How do you handle fear, self-doubt or anxieties?
I meditate and set intentions and positive affirmations for my day. Whenever something comes along that throws off my energy or makes me feel negative, anxious, or upset, I return to those affirmations and reflect on them for a bit before moving forward.
Sweating helps with this, too! Just going for a walk in nature can help me regroup big time.
12. What is your approach to maintaining a healthy “work/ life balance?”
I used to feel so stressed about making sure that everything in Philosophie was moving forward while also being the best mother and wife I could. One day, it hit me though—as long as my kids are safe, happy, and healthy, that’s all that truly matters. Everything else is an added bonus in life.
13. If you had 24 extra hours in your week, what would you do with it (personal or professional)?
I would spend time with my kids, my husband, and my family. I think if you look back at your life, you may regret working too much, staring at a screen, and thinking about money. But you will never ever think, “Wow, I really regret all that time I spent with my loved ones.”
14. What is your vision for your business? What is the mark you wish to leave on the world?
I want people to love, appreciate, and respect themselves. A huge part of that is being kind to our bodies, and that means eating beautiful, nourishing foods, actively moving and engaging in something that we love, and hushing that negative, self-deprecating voice in our heads while turning up the volume on the one that is telling us that we are amazing, we are talented, and that we can do it.
15. Many would say that women face more challenges as a business owner than their male counterparts. What would your advice be for young women looking to launch a new venture of their own?
Embrace being a woman; never stop being ambitious, strong, and compassionate. Ask questions, seek guidance, and don’t see this as a weakness. Build a tribe and be there to support other women—success and happiness is not a finite resource, there’s more than enough for everyone.
16. What advice would you give to young women who worry about their future—or are unsure which career path to choose?
Find your passion, something that fulfills you, something that challenges you, something that springs you out of bed and into the world.
Fill your life with people who give you energy, who support you in your mission, and who will be there for you on darker days, as well as the brighter ones.
17. In the spirit of our #sheforshe campaign, which women have supported or inspired you the most throughout your career?
My mom! Her strength and personal story helped shape Cacao Magic. Seven years ago, she had stage four breast cancer, and during that time, I was along her side for all of her treatments, her hair loss, and her extreme pain. To endure such a troubling period, she used a mixture of western and eastern modalities of healing and was seeing a Chinese doctor. He recommended the Chinese medicinal mushroom reishi, which I integrated into Cacao Magic. She is now on the other side, and healthier than ever. Her experience has been a major lesson within my own life and has shaped my product line, which I created to help people all over the world feel better by saturating their bodies with the most powerful nutrients on the planet.
Also, my beautiful goddess friends inspire me daily. Without them I wouldn't make it through my day to day. The endless support from them and constant inspiration keeps me reaching higher and higher. When I get together with my friends for hikes or coffee, we make magic happen. We are there to lift each other higher, not compete. this is the essence of what I hope to strive for and what women should be doing instead of knocking each other down. Just a few of these friends are: @caleyalyssa, @theneshamaproject, @katieshuler, @marybethlarue, @thebodybook, @jenpastiloff.
Thank You Sophie!
(( You are an inspiration for our generation and we appreciate every bit of work that you're doing!! ))
